MIAC 2022

International technology group ANDRITZ will be presenting its innovative technologies for sustainable paper production at MIAC 2022, booth #72 in Lucca, Italy, October 12-14, 2022.

Our main motto for this year's MIAC is Sustainability in Practice. ANDRITZ will be presenting innovative technologies that enable customers to save energy, water and raw materials. The product portfolio ranges from specific solutions for the entire paper and board production process, from fiber preparation to the paper and board machine, that help to reduce production costs and increase output and product quality.

ANDRITZ will offer a comprehensive program of keynote presentations every 20 minutes on the first two days of the trade show, showing how paper producers can save energy, water or raw materials with ANDRITZ solutions.

Recycled press felts improve CO2 balance 

The production of press felts for paper machines generates considerable quantities of high-grade plastic as waste material.

At our site in Gloggnitz, Austria, alone, this amounts to several hundred tons a year. Valuable material that we can now recycle and return to the production of new felts.

This makes our product more sustainable again - An advantage not only for the environment, but also for paper producers who are interested in sustainability.

Smart Rolls – Efficient production with dynamic NIP profile monitoring 

The Smart Rolls are equipped with sensors to measure the nip conditions in the roll cover in real time. In contrast to static measurements, dynamic measurements allow thermal, mechanical, or vacuum influences to be analyzed during operation. This enables performance optimization without downtime. Smart Rolls are available for all roll positions in pulp and paper production, including suction roll and tissue Yankee applications. In addition to the rolls equipped with sensors, the complete package includes a dedicated computer system for measurement data processing, a receiver unit for data transfer, diagnostic software for analyzing the measured values, and various connection options to other computers, control systems, or even to mobile devices via an app.

Our deep knowledge of papermaking allows us, to not only focus on the refining itself but also consider effects occurring further downstream, for example dusting, caliper or bulk in tissue applications. Sustainability is high up on our agenda and energy and fiber savings are the priority for us.

Bonetti: Portfolio introduction to doctor, creping and coater blades

International technology group ANDRITZ has signed an agreement to acquire the Bonetti Group, headquartered in Milan, Italy.

Established in 1923, Bonetti is a global manufacturer and supplier of doctor, creping and coater blades, as well as blade holders, and also provides services for paper machines.

This acquisition extends and strengthens ANDRITZ’s aftermarket business and supplements the company’s current Paper Machine Service portfolio. Bonetti is a well-recognized brand in the global paper machine market and known for its high-quality technology products.

Fossil free energy

ANDRITZ shows a sustainable and efficient drying concept with fossil free energy resource like green electric energy from wind farms and solar farms.

Prime in pulping with the PrimeSolve LC System

The PrimeSolve LC System builds on ANDRITZ' pulping technology, which has been well proven over decades. Several latest key technological innovations have been applied to meet the demands caused by steadily increasing reject amount in the RCF material.

The new LC pulping system offers following benefits:

  • Lowest fiber loss and optimum treatment of fibers/flakes by applying higher shear forces in pulper and detrasher
  • Advanced rag operation thanks to new designs for pulper rotor, hood and ragger
  • Reliable and efficient operation as to reject removal due to design improvements at junk trap and detrasher
  • Energy savings thanks to fluid-dynamically optimized pulper rotor and vat
  • Very stable consistency and filling level thanks to innovative control system
Refiner exchange within 24 hours

ANDRITZ offers with the Exchange concept for LC Refiner replacements a solution for old refiners.

The aim is to offer the customer a refiner that can be installed in a fraction of the time required for a conventional new refiner project to minimize downtimes and production loss.

The TF-style swing door refiners designed by ANDRITZ fit on the existing foundation and match the existing drive train and inlet/outlet connections.

By eliminating the expensive project and installation costs, the only cost factor to consider in refiner replacements is the new refiner itself.

Dilution upgrade for screening systems

ANDRITZ has developed a dilution upgrade to reduce the reject thickening and at the same time protect the rotor interior from contaminants.

Lower thickening minimizes plugging risk and reduces fiber losses, thereby increasing the yield.

This simple but smart solution leads to huge fiber savings and to reduced maintenance costs.

Effective energy and fiber savings with VIB SteamTech

Improving the sheet’s cross-directional moisture profile has been demonstrated as being one of the most effective and economical means of saving fibers and energy and of improving overall quality levels.

Papermakers understand that there is no single, optimum solution to both increase efficiency and enhance final paper quality. However, partnering with ANDRITZ to identify the most cost-effective means of achieving an even level sheet cross machine moisture will ensure a rapid return on the investment.


Forming fabrics on packaging gap former applications

Lightweight packaging paper grades with their cost saving potentials revolutionize the market and are expected to grow further in the coming years.

Alike Graphical Paper production lines in earlier years, such lightweight packaging paper grades are produced today on demanding fast operating Gap Formers.

With the case studies we are going to introduce to our customers you will learn how our EDC Forming Fabric solutions help to improve machine efficiency at stable machine run-ability and with less water- and fiber-carry. As a result the machine cleanliness improves and paper sheet brake risks reduce.

A better dewatering efficiency at reduced vacuum levels allow a cost efficient operation. The improved retention and paper sheet strength leads to a lower retention aid and chemical consumption and offer further sizable benefits for an efficient energy and raw material usage. EDC forming fabrics are an unique and superior solution compared to conventional SSB forming fabrics.

Alternative fibers for tissue production Essity Mannheim

Essity operates an innovative mechanical pulping line supplied by ANDRITZ. The new system features a capacity of 100 bdmt/d and processes 100% wheat straw to produce bleached straw pulp for the mill’s own tissue production.

As raw material for pulp production, the facility mainly uses FSC- and/or PEFC-certified thinning and waste wood from the area surrounding the mill.

Essity has now also been using plant-based agricultural residue from local farms for the production of high-quality tissue since the new equipment was started up

The innovative process uses less water and energy and can thus be considered a breakthrough in sustainable tissue manufacturing.

The plant in Mannheim is the first of its kind in Europe and the first in the world to operate on a large scale.


Multi-injection chamber for cleaner plant market

ANDRITZ has developed a new innovative patented Multi Injection Chamber (MIC) for the cleaner plant market.

This new reject dilution chamber design addresses many of the common problems that jeopardize daily operations — runnability issues, yield issues, and energy consumption.

A Cleaner can operate at higher consistency with the proper application of reject dilution. Runnability significantly improves with diluted rejects and in addition, at increased consistency much less power is required.

Reduced reject flowrate with fiber savings also minimizes water consumption: 100 l/min of recovered water in final rejects save 50 million liters of water annually. Enhanced performance by effective dilution directly translates into TCO (total cost of ownership) savings.

Tissue: Digital solution to reduce breaks and increase capacity (with case study)


Paper Board: Digital Twin Fiber GPS to replace fresh fiber (with case study)

Fiber GPS is a kind of digital twin for the refining in the stock preparation area. Goal of the digital twin/simulation based on Metris IDEAS application is to model the paper quality parameters like burst, tensile strength (up to 12 parameters) after stock preparation with existing used refiner equipment.

After evaluation of the simulation model with machine data an optimizer is developed to optimize the different stock demand (e.g. ratio between waste paper vs. fresh fiber) and the energy demand in the refining based on the total costs by keeping the quality parameters in a specific limit.

To get a good simulation result it is also mandatory to have the local control loops (e.g. consistency control) in good shape. The health of the control loops can be monitored and improved by Metris CPA tool. Otherwise the variation of the measurements/loops will influence the results of the simulation and optimization negatively.

The benefit for the customer are:

  • Usage of more waste paper instead of fresh fiber which will lead to
    • Cost savings by replacing high price fresh fiber with waste paper
    • Production increase when fresh fiber is limited
  • Stabilization of all control loops will lead to a more stable operation of the paper machine


Upgrade On-the-Fly – a unique method for upgrading aging automation systems

ANDRITZ Automation has developed a unique method / procedure for upgrading aging automation systems. This method was specifically developed for the demands of the pulp and paper industry.

Many processes are controlled by out of date automation systems that do not match today’s technology. In many cases these systems contribute to production and quality losses, leading to unreliable and unstable process performance.

Furthermore, these systems are often no longer supported by the suppliers, causing problems for necessary system expansions or even small system modifications.
In most cases upgrades offered by DCS suppliers are partial innovations, covering solely software & hardware upgrades, forcing periodic retrofits, and longer lasting shutdowns of the process-areas.


Bar-Tec U-Twist – the perfect balance of screening efficiency, capacity, and runnability

In a traditional basket design with a given slot width, the manufacturer must find a compromise between screening efficiency and capacity with a profile height that is uniform over the entire basket height.

With the Bar-Tec UTwist, ANDRITZ offers the first and only screen basket that perfectly balances screening efficiency, capacity, and runnability.

A minimum profile height close to the feed end provides a greater reduction of impurities and as a result, higher screening efficiency. By twisting the bars towards the reject area we are able to raise the profile height, reducing thickening and minimizing the risk of plugging.


Metris addIQ RheoScan – Automatic polymer dosage in sludge dewatering

ANDRITZ has introduced the next generation of its unique Metris addIQ RheoScan, an optical measurement system for automatic polymer dosage in sludge dewatering to increase process stability and reduce operating costs.

Metris addIQ RheoScan measures the actual sludge conditions in the thickening and dewatering process in real time by the help of an intelligent camera system.

The polymer dose needed is adjusted to match changing flow rates and sludge conditions – automatically and with the utmost precision. This allows for almost fully autonomous machinery operation 24/7, effectively eliminating downtime and increasing operational stability.
