Smart Woodyard Process Optimization

Image
Reduce energy consumption and improve process stability from receiving wood to chip cooking.

Woodyard is a dynamic environment with varying conditions and often less digitalized when it comes to operator workload and daily decision-making. Smart Woodyard Process Optimization packages fit versatile environments with certain preconditions for adjusting the process accordingly.

In Smart Woodyard Process Optimization, the complete process area or parts are optimized together with ANDRITZ experts, configuring optimization of the process at the site. Woodyard process optimization comprises the process from wood receiving to chip cooking.

Maximize yield by debarking optimization

The purpose of the debarking process is to separate the bark from the wood withthe required capacity and debarking result. Often, there is space for improvement in wood loss and energy consumption.

By optimizing the debarking station, it is not only about monetary savings but also about increasing the sustainability and stability of the process by using less raw material in the woodyard and the entire mill.

Concrete benefit: improved (approx.) 0,5% of yield

1. The debarking degree is measured (95%), and a setpoint of 92% is set:

2.  The gate position is adjusted from 30% to 35%:

3. Once the setpoint is met by optimizing the debarking process, significant savings are unlocked:

Other benefits:

Process efficiency:

  • Improved process stability
  • Increased yield
  • Increased cost efficiency

Availability:

  • Optimized performance and availability
  • Less production shutdowns
  • Improving and stabilizing pulp quality

Sustainability:

  • Improved resource efficiency
  • Decreased energy consumption

Safety:

  • Decreased operator workload
  • Simple to use for operators (integration to familiar main control systems)

Operator actions reduction:

  • Increased data-driven decision-making on the mill level
  • Decreased workload for operators and loaders

Autonomy:

  • Increased level of the woodyard automation
